Wind or silent reflux?

Thanks for posting your query.

I am Dr.R.K and I am pleased to assist you.

What would you like to know?

Customer: replied 12 days ago.
Baby still full of gas even now burps and bottom wind is this normal? Or could reflux be a possibly? Grunts a lot even after burping

What feeds is she on?

Is she gaining weight?

How are her bowel movements?

Customer: replied 12 days ago.
She's on 7oz every 3-4 hours? Yes gaining weight, poos well twice a day usually not constipated
Customer: replied 12 days ago.
You can still gain weight with silent reflux though as it's not projectile
Customer: replied 12 days ago.
She just seems uncomfortable to me even after winding
Customer: replied 12 days ago.
She's been like this since birth

As long as the baby is gaining weight and is having good bowel movements, there is nothing to worry about either reflux or bottom wind. These are all normal physiological things that are seen.

Reflux is considered pathological only if there is no gain in weight, and if there is abnormal backward posturing by the baby.

In a growing baby , we see the following things -

1. Whether the baby is gaining weight

2. Whether the development is good

If these two are normal, then the baby is supposed to be health and no active treatment is required.

Let me know if you have anymore questions.

Customer: replied 12 days ago.
What about coughing while drinking , arching back, gagging on nothing?

I have mentioned in my previous post about backward posturing which is the same as arching back which you have mentioned.

This is one of signs of reflux.

Cough again may be due to reflux.

If arching backwards is there, she may need medications to control reflux. She may require PPI medications like omeprazole.

In addition to medication you also need to pat her on her back after feeding to allow her to burp and also keep her in the upright position for at least 30 minutes after feeding.

Let me know if you have anymore questions.

Customer: replied 12 days ago.
If it's just excessive wind when will it get better? I'm on anti colic bottles and have tried everything

You mean the bottom wind?

Customer: replied 12 days ago.
All symptoms. Hiccups coughs sneezes grunts gags, windy with burps and bottom gas, coughs, gags, arches back

Is she your first baby?

Customer: replied 12 days ago.
Normal doctors here say nothing wrong as she's putting on weight but if it was silent reflux then I'm worried
Customer: replied 12 days ago.
Yes she is

That is what even I said.

As long as she is gaining weight and developing normal, we need not worry

Customer: replied 12 days ago.
Used to scream with wind but doesn't now she cries a lot and I know babies cry but she will be 6 months soon

Oh okay.

All you have mentioned are normal physiological things and not to worry.

Customer: replied 12 days ago.
Sometimes shakes her head too
Customer: replied 12 days ago.
I just want her to be happy :(

A crying baby is considered a normal baby than a baby who never cry at all.
Only when the cry is incessant, it needs medical attention

Customer: replied 12 days ago.
All my friends babies are content but I'm doing everything right

Shakes are normal too.

Customer: replied 12 days ago.
Rapid head shake?

You need to change your perception.

Since she is your first baby, you are very apprehensive.

No two babies are the same. So never compare your baby with other babies.

Your daughter is under the good care of her pediatrician.

As her pediatrician said and as I said, no need to worry as long as

1. She is gaining weight

2. Her development is appropriate for her age.

Let me know if you have anymore questions.

Customer: replied 12 days ago.
No they are normal doctors in the UK not paediatric
Customer: replied 12 days ago.
I must be doing something wrong then :(

But I am a pediatrician :-)

I will repeat.

You need to change your perception.

You should not compare your baby with other babies.

Customer: replied 12 days ago.

Watery stools?

Customer: replied 12 days ago.
Poo again

The consistency looks fine. I would not worry about this

Customer: replied 12 days ago.
Be honest doc. Do you think I'm just worrying for nothing? I can't help it though :( I don't know why she still cries after burps

Yes you are worrying for nothing.

That is the reason why I asked whether she is your first baby. Because everything about her is new to you and you are worried looking at even normal things.

Customer: replied 12 days ago.
Also I thought anti colic bottles would prevent gas? No change since using these?
Customer: replied 12 days ago.
So do normal babies do all that is listed above? Hiccups gag arch etc

Yes all babies do. But not necessarily all are seen in all babies.

You keep only the following in your mind -

1. Weight gain is good

2. Development is appropriate

Customer: replied 12 days ago.
When will the gas ease ?

Some amount of gas is again normal only.

It is a byproduct of digestion.

Only if the digestion is improper, then you need to worry. But if there is improper digestion, baby will not gain weight.

Customer: replied 12 days ago.
Also any other burping techniques?

I usually advise the following-

1. Pat on the back after feeding till she burps

2. Keep the baby in upright posture for at least 30 minutes after feeding

We had a good lengthy discussion.

You had a good discussion with other experts also.

All I say before I wind up is stop worrying for nothing.

Customer: replied 12 days ago.
Second opinions are valid was just wondering why my daughters still uncomfortable

As I said they are all normal phenomena

Customer: replied 12 days ago.
Any idea when it ends? The coughing on milk gagging being uncomfortable
Customer: replied 12 days ago.
Also formula bits in poo like seeds

You can expect significant changes at around 9 to 12 months when she would be able to stand and try to walk.

Upright posture will bring the changes. And as I said these are normal only.

At 5 months she would have just attained the milestone of rolling over

Poo looks fine.

We should not treat only looking at the poo. We should see in what way it is affecting her.

She is gaining weight and that is all I would see as a doctor.

Shall we close the chat?

Customer: replied 12 days ago.
As long as you feel she is OK

I assure you. She is absolutely fine.

You need to trust me :-)
