My 4 month old baby started having diarrea and low grade

Customer Question

Hi, my 4 month old baby started having diarrea and low grade fever yesterday (37.8 highest). He was fussy during the day but felt better at times after having some calpol.
JA: How long have you had a fever? Do you have any respiratory symptoms?
Customer: At night we put him in the cot and he felt cold to touch so I checked and his temp was 35.5 we’ve done skin to skin and put blankets on him but he still feels cold last temperature is 35.9 He is a bit more drowsy than usual - maybe he’s in a deep sleep
JA: Is there anything else the Expert should know before I connect you? Rest assured that they'll be able to help you.
Customer: we were also in contact with someone who tested positive for covid two days after meeting with us
Customer: He fed an hour ago which is reassuring

Hello. This is Dr Geyik and I will be assisting you today.

Can I please ask if he has any signs of pain, rash, cough, breathing difficulties, vomiting, urine problems?

Customer: replied 19 days ago.
Hi Dr Geyik, no he doesn’t. I don’t know if he was in pain today as he seemed uncomfortable and fussier than usual
Customer: replied 19 days ago.
He’s had a bit of a cough for a couple of weeks now but only coughs two to three times a day, that’s all
Expert:  KemalG replied 19 days ago.

Is he awake or sleeping at the moment?

Customer: replied 19 days ago.
It’s a dry cough
Expert:  KemalG replied 19 days ago.

If he is sleeping at the moment, are you able to wake him up?

Expert:  KemalG replied 19 days ago.

And can you check his temperature now please?

Customer: replied 19 days ago.
He is sleeping
Expert:  KemalG replied 19 days ago.

Is he rousable because you said he was a bit drowsy?

Customer: replied 19 days ago.
I just put a sleeping blanket on him and he moves but continues sleeping
Customer: replied 19 days ago.
Even when he fed an hour ago he kept his eyes closed throughout the feed
Expert:  KemalG replied 19 days ago.

Can you check his temperature and breathing? Is his breathing normal to you?

Customer: replied 19 days ago.
The thermometer says his temp is 35.3
Expert:  KemalG replied 19 days ago.

Is that in the ear or armpit?

Expert:  KemalG replied 19 days ago.

And any rash anywhere at all?

Customer: replied 19 days ago.
Ear temp
Customer: replied 19 days ago.
I just woke up but it wasn’t easy, I don’t know if he was in a deep sleep
Customer: replied 19 days ago.
He cried but hasn’t opened his eyes
Expert:  KemalG replied 19 days ago.

Finally, could you check his hands and feet; are they cold, hot or normal temperature?

Customer: replied 19 days ago.
No rashes
Customer: replied 19 days ago.
His hands are normal temp
Customer: replied 19 days ago.
Feet are Normal, not very warm but not cold
Customer: replied 19 days ago.
I meant to say that I woke HIM up earlier, not me
Expert:  KemalG replied 19 days ago.

The only concerning symptoms are the low temperature of 35.3 and being drowsy.

Although this could just be a viral illness it is a bit worrying that he has low temperature and is a bit drowsy, so I feel that it is best if you could get him checked in the hospital to ensure he is stable and will not deteriorate.

You can also call 111 but it will take a long time see a doctor.

Customer: replied 19 days ago.
Temp is now 35.9
Customer: replied 19 days ago.
hes on my husbands chest
Expert:  KemalG replied 19 days ago.

That is much better.

In that case, I suggest you call 111 for further assessment.

And if his temperature drops below 35.5 again, he develops breathing issues, vomiting, rash, more drowsiness, then you should take him to A+E or call 999.

Customer: replied 19 days ago.
I can’t call 111 from the uk
Customer: replied 19 days ago.
Sorry I mean from abroad, I’m in Spain at the moment
Expert:  KemalG replied 19 days ago.

Are you able to see a local doctor in the morning?

Customer: replied 19 days ago.
Is it acceptable that he cries but doesn’t open his eyes? Should I worry about it?
Expert:  KemalG replied 19 days ago.

That can happen with babies, especially at this time of the night as they are naturally very sleepy.

Expert:  KemalG replied 19 days ago.

You can give him paracetamol for any fever and/or irritation. You should make sure he feeds well.

Customer: replied 19 days ago.
Okay so as long as his temp is above 35.5 he’s okay?
Customer: replied 19 days ago.
if he becomes more drowsy I’ll take him to A&E
Customer: replied 19 days ago.
Drowsy or any of the symptoms you mentioned
Expert:  KemalG replied 19 days ago.

Plus if he is rousable and not too drowsy, feeding well, breathing normally, doesn't have a rash or vomiting, then he should be fine.

Expert:  KemalG replied 19 days ago.

Yes, that is fine.

Customer: replied 19 days ago.
Great thank you
Expert:  KemalG replied 19 days ago.

You are most welcome.
