This answer was rated:

I get the message "Filter" failed when sending print jobs to a Canon MF8380Cdw.
The files are sent from a MacBook Air running IOS 10.10.
Occasionally this does not happen, and the file is printed.
Your advice would be much appreciated
Hi, thank you for contacting My name is Russell. I will do my best to provide the right answer to your question.

I suggest that you first

- reset the printing system. ( If you need instructions on how to do that, do the following:
Go to the Apple menu then to the System Preferences, then click on Printers & Scanners.

Hold down the Control key as you click in the list at the left, then choose “Reset printing system” from the menu that appears.

- then re-Add the printer, in the Print & Scan preferences.

Then try printing again. The 'filter' referenced is a software item on your Apple computer.

If this answers the question adequately, please rate my Answer - favorably I would expect - so that I may be paid for the work I have done on your question. Thanks.

Hi Russell

Thank you.

I will do that tomorrow as I am not at the same location as the printer until the morning.

OK Dudley. Be sure to let me know how it goes, please - at your convenience, of course. Thanks.

Hi Russell

I have only just been able to try your solution.

Sorry, but there is no difference. I get the same message.

I will not be in this office again until Monday. So if you have any ideas I will try then.

Was the Apple computer recently updated to Yosemite (MAC OS X 10.10) ?
Customer: replied 3 years ago.

Yes. It is updated to Yosemite.

Customer: replied 3 years ago.

I have just tried your first suggestion again and deleted the printers in the "Systems" section.

Now when I go to reinstall the printer it only recognises it as a scanner.

Could this be the problem?

Well, if it is only installed successfully as a scanner (and if you can confirm this by doing a scan successfully when the printing operation has failed-owing-to-filter) then yes, that would be a source of the problem, though not much of a diagnosis nor any indicator of exactly what to do about it.

What source of a driver for the printer's printing functions have you been using?

Or to put it another way, where does the printer driver come from?

If you updated to Yosemite without updating the printer driver also, there might be some 'crossing' of versions and version-appropriate behavior on the part of the printer driver.

Meanwhile, you need a driver for the printing functions of the printer. Get one here?:

and select
OS X Yosemite v10.10
and then download and install the driver
MF Printer Driver & Utilities for Macintosh [etc.]

That might help! try it.
