Customer Question

I have a Macbook pro. and a Canon Pixma MP500 which has given me no issues for many years, great printer, still going strong.
I had problems with Google Chrome browser no longer supported, so have updated the operating system on the mac to OS X el Capitan 10.11.4.
Now it will not talk to my printer... I am told that Canon have stopped supporting updates for this printer, and there is not software that will help el Capitan connect to the printer.
Have you any advice / hint / tips? or shall I have to buy a new printer?
If so, I would need the same functions, print scan copy, nothing fancy (no photo printing, and NO WIRELESS - must have cable connection) - which is the latest version that will be compatible for further updates etc?
thank you.

Hi, thank you for contacting My name is Russell. I will do my best to provide the right answer to your question. I presume that your current printer is configured to print via a wireless connection? If so, such connections often have problems after a while. One fallback, if the problem proves to be a permanent breakage or failure of the printer's circuitry, is to print by the USB cable connection instead, which usually still works, even in a case like yours. Try it. The USB functions are simpler programming, and don't necessarily need updating as networked functions like wireless access often do. As for whether Canon issues an upgrade for your current version of the MAC OS X... I have looked that up, and find that MAC OS X 10.7 was the last version that Canon provided fully updated drivers for. If you really contemplate replacing the printer over this issue consider two facts at least:1. if you have already bought unused ink cartridges in any quantity, a new printer that still accepts that type of ink will save you that much money, and2. Canon accepts recycled printers of their making, and used to offer compensation toward a new printer that way. Here's Canon's recycling page, or you could call 1-800-OK-CANON and ask them about their current printer recycling policy and offers: Canon's newer printers will all have MAC OS X 10.11 capability. Be assured of that. If you don't buy Used, you'll get the right printer. If you contemplate buying Used, then let me know what printer model(s) you contemplate buying, and I will tell you what their update status for 10.11 (and past versions) is. If this answers your question fully please rate my answer. Thanks, ***** ***** luck.
