All content is recorded in DR (direct record) mode using the same bitrate (8Mbps for HD, 4Mbps for SD) as the original, to the hard disk.

This cannot be changed, it is only set to this.

I'm recording from a cable box and the mode has gone down to LP

That is Long Play and Short Play, it will do that Bob as compression, but it is not changing the format it is recording it, it just does this to conserve space on the hard drive and is dependent on the length of the recording.
