I do not understand the expression "external input channel" when it comes to recording from the t.v. to a dvd disc.

It means you need to switch to the input channel that your TV is connected to, this is the external input channel eg: HDMI, AV ect.

My t.v. has the following connections on its menu :TV, AV4 (dvd),AV5 (tnt), French satellite
ok, then you will switch it to AV4 (DVD) for the DVD player
