A grandparent or great grandparent has no automatic right of contact to a grandchild or great grandchild. In this case where your grandson is being denied contact, he should be seeing a lawyer with a view to taking his ex girlfriend to court for a contact order. A court will grant such an order if it is in the best interests of the child to do so. That means that when your grandson has contact you can see the child.
