how can you tell the ownership of a garden fence between 2

Customer Question

how can you tell the ownership of a garden fence between 2 residential properties.

Are there any standard boundary laws that determine ownership? if the fence (or hedge) is built along the boundary - ho do you determine ownership, and responsibility for repair/trimming etc

Thank you for your question.

A fence or hedge which is on a boundary, as opposed to on either side of a boundary, is generally owned in common between the proprietors of each of the dwellings that it separates. Each party is jointly liable for the maintenance, repair and renewal. This is the position at common law but is also usually reflected in the title deeds of huge properties.
