Just bought a Tanaka tbc 600.I mixed the fuel to 50/1 and started it.After a couple of mins i got a burning smell coming from the engine.Do you need to remove anything from the engine compartment, such as a gasket or should i leave it in?
With any new unit, it will burn off the paint on the muffler and exhaust parts. Not unusual at all. There is nothing to remove, just watch it and, and in a short while the smell should go away.

can i use the strimmer for long periods to start with or just for a short while

Use it like you stole it. It needs no break in, go for it! If it were mine I would add a little more two cycle oil to get mix to about 40 to 1 on the new engine. It will smoke a little more, but gives better protection for the piston/rings.

How long will i use it at 40/1? what else should i look out for?

Just the first tank or two, after that use it like normal!
