Make and model of engine? Backfiring is sign of valve open when the spark occurs. Have the valves been checked?

It is a brigs and Stratton engine how do I free up the valves with out pulling head

Flat head engine? Valves are in the cylinder block, and the springs are accessed through the vent cover, behind the carburetor . You would want to check the valves for clearance.
