I have a Motorola Moto G mobile phone and I want to find out

Customer Question

Hi. I have a Motorola Moto G mobile phone and I want to find out how to save apps onto the SD card rather than internal phone storage. Any ideas
JA: What Operating System (OS) are you running on your Moto?
Customer: android
JA: How long has this been going on with your Moto? What have you tried so far?
Customer: when I go into an individual app there is a "button" that says "Move to SD Card" but I can't seem to activate it
JA: Anything else you want the Smartphone Expert to know before I connect you?
Customer: Don't think so. Just want to free up memory on internal drive by transferring to SD Card those apps I don't use often.

I’m sorry to hear you're having trouble. I know that can be frustrating. Hopefully, we can get this resolved quickly.

Can we please try the following:

To move an application to the SD card go into settings > apps > scroll down to the application you want to move and select it > storage >: switch the Storage location to the SD card.

Please let me know how this goes.

HiI have already tried this method. As I put in my query, I can see the "move to SD card" button but I can't activate it. It's not highlighted as an option like the other buttons (uninstall, etc)

Customer: replied 6 days ago.
Hi. It has been successful. However, it is only offering to transfer 2 of my current apps. Is it the case that some apps aren't suitable for it? Was thinking of putting Trainline App and few others
Expert:  Jeffrey B replied 6 days ago.

understood, thank you

this is correct not all apps can be moved, except when you root your plhone.

Kind regards,

Jeffrey

Customer: replied 6 days ago.
HiDo you mean reboot your phone, rather than "root"? I was wondering whether backing-up my SD card and then reformatting it in the device would allow me to move more of my apps to the card?Felcity
Expert:  Jeffrey B replied 6 days ago.

understood, thank you

no i meant root, this allows you to move other (buid in) apps,

did we also remove the cache from most apps?

Kind regards,

Jeffrey

Customer: replied 6 days ago.
Ok, I am not familiar with the term "root", and I don't know how to do that. I have not removed the cache from most of my apps so I will do that tomorrow morning, and will then get back to you with the results. Many thanksFelicity

Hi.Apologies for the delay in getting back to you - I have been unwell.Unfortunately, there is insufficient memory on my phone to download "root check". Not sure whether it's worth deleting apps to download root check ...... will it enable me to transfer apps to the SD card after?Sorry to keep firing things back at you. Many thanksFelicity

As far as I remember, we did that previously
Customer: replied 3 days ago.
When I did it previously, they reverted to 16.00kb cache. Is that what you expect or is there futher clearing to be done?
Expert:  Jeffrey B replied 3 days ago.

Customer: replied 3 days ago.
It says it hasn't properly installed, but not specified why
Customer: replied 3 days ago.
It says "Root Access has not properly been installed on this device"
Expert:  Jeffrey B replied 3 days ago.

understood, thank you

when we try the app2sd app now, does it move the apps?

Kind regards,

Jeffrey

Customer: replied 3 days ago.
Unfortunately not. There only app it says is movable is the Root Checker app
Expert:  Jeffrey B replied 3 days ago.

understood, thank you

  1. Touch Apps
  2. Touch Settings
  3. Scroll down the screen, then touch Storage

does it work then?

Kind regards,

Jeffrey

Customer: replied 3 days ago.
Where are you expecting me to touch "apps". The only way I can do this, as far as I know, is via the Settings menu, which I did, but I then don't see a further "settings" option, and then "storage" option.I can go into the "Settings" menu, then select "Apps", which then shows a list of all the apps on my phone. If I select a particular app and scroll down, the "Move to SD card" is still not an optionHope this makes sense
Expert:  Jeffrey B replied 3 days ago.

understood, thank you

we can try to install walwarebytes, this also removes old cache from the p;hone.

Jeffrey

Customer: replied 3 days ago.
That comes up with "Files by Google" .... want me to download that?By the way, I have AVG Cleaner (free version) on my phone that regularly cleans cache, etc. Is that the same type of thing?
Customer: replied 3 days ago.
I've installed it and opened it. Should I proceed to follow directions for "Freeing-up space"?
Expert:  Jeffrey B replied 3 days ago.

yes please,

yes correct, that is the same kind of software.

Kind regards,

Jeffrey

Customer: replied 3 days ago.
Right, it's suggesting an unused app and large files to delete. Happy to delete the app but want to keep the videos for now
Customer: replied 3 days ago.
Should I uninstall AVG then
Customer: replied 3 days ago.
Hi. I have done that and let it "clean" and free up space. However, need to go to bed now so I will play around with it again tomorrow. Thanks for your help. Hopefully, it will soon be sorted.Take careFelicity
