Hello and thank you for allowing me to assist you.
You may be able to reclaim VAT paid on goods or services bought before you registered for VAT if the purchases were made within certain time limits.
There’s a time limit for backdating claims for VAT paid before registration. From your date of registration the time limit is:
4 years for goods you still have, or that were used to make other goods you still have
6 months for services
The construction of buildings, and certain works to protected buildings, intended to be used solely for non-business purposes or as a village hall or similar can be zero-rated.
Generally a charity would pay VAT at a reduced rate (5%) or the ‘zero rate’ on some goods and services.
You could reclaim for the additional amount your organization paid in VAT for goods but not services prior to the 6 months mentioned above.
