My father in law passed away last year, he was not married

This answer was rated:

My father in law passed away last year, he was not married but lived with his partner they had 50% share of the property and in his will he passed that over to her.
Our solicitor advises that this share has to be include in the inheritance tax calculations although my wife will not benefit at all from it.
Is there anything that can be done from a tax perspective to avoid this?
