I have a 53 plate avensis 2.4 vvti petrol. The dipped headlights

I have a 53 plate avensis 2.4 vvti petrol. The dipped headlights are very dim so much so the car has just failed mot. When initially turning the lights on they seem too warm up and get brighter but are still very dim

this sounds like a poor earth connection

I'd start by checking that the earth point onto the car body for the wiring loom thats down by the front of the car under the bonnet is clean and tight

any corrosion must be removed with sandpaper or a wire brush

if thats OK then consider replacing the headlamp relay with a new part

Would this be so if both sidelights and main beam work perfectly well?

Hello Howard

the side lights and mains ae seperate earth circuits so yes its quite possible a poor earth connection can drop out just the dipped beams
