I have a very low whine coming from my Toyota Avensis

Customer Question

I have a very low whine coming from my Toyota Avensis multimedia. Sounds like the alternator. I was wondering if an interference suppressor should be fitted. Gary
JA: What is the model/year of your Toyota?
Customer: T25 hatchback 2006
JA: Are you fixing your Hatchback yourself? What have you tried so far?
Customer: Yes I took out existing radio put in sat nav multimedia my son in law had bought for me. It's a cheap one but works great. Whine was loud so looked on YouTube and saw articles saying wire Rca sockets together and it worked. A lot of noise gone but only a bit left and it's annoying. Ok on music ad can't hear it but on sat nav annoying
JA: Is this an aftermarket stereo, or did it come with the car?
Customer: Aftermarket
JA: Anything else you want the mechanic to know before I connect you?
Customer: Don't think so

interference from the alternator but you say you have looked some things up ?

Customer: replied 4 months ago.
I saw that if you write the rca sockets together and earth them or goes away but it only got better not away. I use an Iso harness I bought for the avensis. Seen a few ground loop things on Amazon but i am no good with electrics

Wire not write

Generally you shouldnt have interference via the alternator ona modern vehicle if the replacement unit you fitted is already fitted with a suppressor..which going by what you have said being fairly cheap then that need need to be taken into account.. have you tried running an earth wire from the back of the radio/unit to the bodywork (the closer to the battery earth the better).? try that...if not then you need something like this wired in CLICK HERE - considering you have mentioned not being acquainted with car electrics then it might be worth employing an auto electrian to carry out an inspection of the installation, fitting of supressor if required..
