when i turn the ignition on before starting there is whining

when i turn the ignition on before starting there is whining sound that come from the engine and when i turn the engine off the whining sounds remain there for like 5 sec after turning the engine off. what can possible the problem please. its a vauxhall astra 1.7 diesel 05 reg

Hi .

This could possiblily be the electric cooling fan , open the hood and have a helper switch on the ignition and look at the radiator area for the cooling fans if you see they switch on and whine then it was the fans if not try and locate where the whunning is coming from .

If this happens with the engine not running then it has to be electrical ,and mostly this will be the fans .
