Ok..sounds like a very strange issue to be honest...normally automatics in most vauxhalls dont stop working totally after a certain amount of time..they either stop working in certain gears or dont provide any forward or backward power..or the car simply goes in limp home mode...if youhave lost all gears then the problems likely internal or the control side/TCM is should have gearbox warning symbol and the tells you that issue has been recorded by the tcm and stored as fault codes..ideally what id do here or have garage do is check the oil condition in the gearbox..its certainly one of things that needs checked and the oil drained from it can tell alot..if its burnt then the gearbox is bad and needs replaced/reconditoned ideally - you dont mention what model exactly but on some automatics more so Astra etc..they can suffer from automatic cooler failure and this results in coolant getting into the gearbox fluid and basically damages the gearbox if left to long...also there isnt really alot of checks that can be done on diy bases without having it plugged in and the diagnostic tool recording what exactly happens by monitoring the tcm pids on the screen to see what drops out or shows up as faulty..I do hope this helps
