I have a 2 year old male Budgie who has been off colour since

Customer Question

I have a 2 year old male Budgie who has been off colour since January. He had a a swelling on his cere. The vet who admitted they didn't specialise in birds tried him on antibiotics which seem to help and after 3 courses he seemed to pick but the swelling has been lingering for about a month he now has a nasty looking growth and no one seems to be able to help or advise what it is or if anything can be done and just over the last 2 days he has gone very quiet and his breathing doesnt seem. I have a photo if that would help.

Please help, much loved pet and I don't know what else to do or where to take him

Many Thanks Nicki

Thank you for your question, I'm Dr. Dan and I'll try to help you.

If you would be willing to post a photo that would help a lot!

When you say he is off color are you referring just to his cere or is he acting off in any other way?

I hope this comes through ok. I have looked on the web and everything seems to be pointing towards something called scaly face ? When I say off colour I mean he isnt himself, very quiet and breathing doesnt seem right.

It wont let me send with the photo I have so ill try again later as I have to go to work.

Many thanks

Hi, every time I attach a photo it denies me access and wont send. Is there any other address that I could send it to?

I have tried coverting the file but it isnt working. The growth looks like a dark scab above his right nostril, it started red and has turned a grey colour.

He has gone very quiet when he is normally very chirpy and chatty and he is sleeping alot. Please help very worried ?

Thanks you can upload the picture to a free site like flikr, or another photo sharing site and share the link with us.

When you watch him at rest does he lift his tail up visibly when he's taking a breath in?

The picture was perfect! That looks like a sinus granuloma. Right behind the cere is a large air filled sinus that causes a lot of the difficulties when birds have respiratory infections. Granulomas are basically pus pockets that have little or no moisture so they are very firm and can look like a mass. What this vet needs to do is to remove as much of this as possible and culture it. (The same way they would an infection from a dog or a cat.) That way we know for sure what antibiotic is best and most effective. Until we use the correct antibiotic and remove as much of the mass as possible he'll not return to full "color." Dr. Dan
