Can I give a pug Benadryl to sedate her enough to clip her claws? If so, how much?

Hello Louisa, I'm Dr. Deb and will do my best to help you today.

Yes, you can give Olive Benadryl which often can cause sedation as a side effect. In a very few dogs, however, this drug can have just the opposite effect of excitation. Unfortunately, there's no way to determine ahead of time how she might react to the drug without giving it to her.

The dose of Benadryl is 1 mg/lb which means that a 15 lb dog would take 1/2 of a 25 mg tablet. A 20-25 lb dog would be given a full 25 mg tablet at one time.

It typically takes about 1-2 hours before sedation is seen although I've seen shorter or longer periods of time since there can be individual variation.
The side effects generally last about 6-8 hours or a little longer.

I hope this helps and that the drug sedates her to the point that she can receive her pedicure. Deb
