I have a 10 week old Cockapoo puppy. He has just had his tail

Customer Question

I have a 10 week old Cockapoo puppy. He has just had his tail shut on by a door. Yelped for a bit. Now seems OK but will whimper if I touch his tail. No bleeding. Does he need to see a fet?

Vet : Hi there, vet Andrew here.
Vet : Tail injuries auch as you describe only need treatment if there is a wound or if a tail bone has been broken or dislocated. If his tail appears kinked or bent then you should take him to a vet for splinting or supportive bandaging. Otherwise, there should be no need unless he is showing signs of pain, in which case some pain relief might be needed.
Vet : Have a look at his tail when he is relaxed and running around. You should easily be able to see if it's not straight. If he's continually holding it between his legs, and looking round or showing other signs of distress then have him looked at. In pet dogs we often don't bother trying to mend a break anyway, and the worst that happens is a slight kink that they carry for the rest of their lives with no problems. In show dogs, we sometimes attempt repair.
