I had to have my young syrian hamster put down today - only

This answer was rated:

I had to have my young syrian hamster put down today - only 4 months old. :(
She had an abdominal swelling but other than that was acting perfectly normal. The vet initially suspected an ovarian cyst, but during surgery advised that this was in fact an abscess.
He advised that there was nothing he could do because the abscess had attached itself to the vital organs so she had to be put to sleep.
I can't find anything on the internet relating to this so wondered what the cause of this could have been? Couldn't ask the vet at the time as I was just upset over the phone.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated thank you.
Kind Regards

Hi Jo,I'm here thank you.Kind RegardsEmma
Hello, Emma...
As shocking as it is to discover such severe pathology inside such a young Syrian hamster, I'm afraid it's not all that unusual. The most common causes for a severe abscess within the peritoneal cavity of a young hamster include:abdominal perforationovarian infectionkidney infectionliver infectiontumor growthand others..(typing more)
The silver lining to be found from understanding this is that this didn't happen to her because of anything you did or failed to do. On the contrary, you went to great lengths to try to help her survive a serious illness that couldn't be beaten. Please tell me her name.

Hi Jo,Thank you so much for your valued advice. I just couldn't help but feel guilty because she didn't seem unwell in herself; aside from the abdominal swelling.Am I right in thinking that this condition could not be corrected with surgery due to the seriousness? If I hadn't have had her euthanised would she have eventually died/suffered from this condition? I guess I just want to confirm this so I don't feel so guilty.Your response is greatly appreciated thank you.Emma

Her name was Daisy sorry.
Daisy. What a beautiful name. I'm sorry you've lost her. It sounds as if you and your vet did everything possible, but were simply up against something that could not be beaten. I know it's not much comfort when your heart is broken, but it is not uncommon for situations like this arise with young hamsters. My heart goes out to you. Are you correct in thinking the situation couldn't have been corrected with surgery due to the seriousness? Yes. It was too severe. Yes, if you hadn't had her euthanized she most certainly would have suffered greatly. I'm grateful you were able to spare her that.
I also want you to know there are a lot of resources to help at a time of grief and loss like this. This is one example of an excellent website. Rest assured there are lots of friends out there who understand what a huge hole the loss of such a tiny creature can leave in your heart.
Is there anything else I can help you with today?
