My Shih tzu has been panting & licking a lot since last

Customer Question

Hi my Shih tzu has been panting & licking a lot since last night, we’ve came home today and she has bloody discharge from her vagina, now panting and shaking a lot... she’s 8 yrs old, not been spade but not in season , not sure what to do as vets are closed
Assistant: I'll do all I can to help. What is the Shih Tzu's name?
Customer: lola Thankyou
Assistant: Is there anything else the Veterinarian should be aware of about Lola?
Customer: we took her to the vets a few weeks ago as she didn’t eat for 10 days, nothing else wrong just a bit lathargic, vet said she has lower back pain, gave pain relief injection then she started eating a little more a few days after that, also has seizures but hasn’t for approximately 1 year

Hi Micheal
Expert:  Dr. Michael Salkin replied 5 months ago.

I'm sorry to hear of this with Iola. If she were in heat a few weeks to a few months ago, her discharge and behavior suggest purulent endometriosis (pyometra) which describes a hormonal-based infection of her uterus. This can be life-threatening and so it's important that you find an open vet - a 24-hour facility/emergency hospital - at your earliest convenience. Spaying can be curative but she'll need IV fluids and antibiotics prior to, during, and following surgery. Please respond with further questions or concerns if you wish.

You're quite welcome. Iola is lucky to have you. I'll set a follow up for a couple of days from now but please return to our conversation - even after rating - with an update at your convenience.
