Is bamboo poisonous? Particularly animals in Madagascar

Customer Question

Is bamboo poisonous ?
JA: I'll do all I can to help. What sort of animal are we talking about?
Customer: Particularly animals in Madagascar which eat bamboo
JA: Maybe I'm confused. I thought you had a problem with a pet. Is that correct?
Customer: No. I believe that lemurs in Madagascar eat a lot of bamboo, and I also understand that it contains cyanide. So why do the lemurs not die???
JA: Did you see what the lemur ate?
Customer: No, I'd Just been watching a TV program
JA: Is there anything else the Veterinarian should be aware of about the lemur?
Customer: Not as far as I know

Hello, this is Dr. Linda. I hope I can help with your concerns today.

I do not believe lemurs eat much in the way of bamboo, but giant pandas certainly love to eat bamboo. Yes, it contains cyanide, & people have been sickened eating raw bamboo, but pandas are able to convert & neutralize the cyanide into a harmless compound.

Please reply with any additional questions or concerns you may have.

Thank you.
