Veterinary questions? Ask a Vet for Answers ASAP
Hi there, you are through to Dr Linda, a UK based vet.
I'm sorry to hear Mietzi has this issue.
What age is she?
A video would be good. Is the discharge constant? Any bad smell?
How unusual. So, roughly how much liquid would she discharge in say 1 hour? A drop?
So are you cleaning it or does she wash it off?
Yet, her poos are normal? A few a day, solid brown, no blood, no mucus?
While it is hard to know for sure without examining her, I would suspect this is an anal gland issue.
Kittens have 2 glands within the anus that secrete a sticky or watery liquid which can smell strong, sometimes like fish.
If these are full or infected, we may see discharge like you describe.
Ideally, a vet would examine her back passage as if the glands are full they need emptying. Similarly, if there is an infection she may need antibiotics.
Sometimes, worms are involved, so do ensure she is up to date with a good quality wormer such as Panacur.
The sooner she can be seen the better.
At this age, it is good to get her vaccines started and to have a health check, though I appreciate this may be tricky due to Corona.
Hi there, how is Mietzi getting on?
