My dogs just eaten quite a bit of icecream and I’m a little

Customer Question

Hi, my dogs just eaten quite a bit of icecream and I’m a little concerned
JA: Hi there. I'll do all I can to help. What size is the dog? How much of the ice cream was eaten?
Customer: She’s a bichon/shihtzu and weighs around 5.5kg. I’d say she’s eaten about 3-4 tablespoons of ice cream
JA: Has she thrown up since this happened?
Customer: No she hasn’t, but she’s only just eaten it
JA: What's the dog's name?
Customer: Maggie
JA: Is there anything else the Vet should know?
Customer: She has a bit of a weak stomach which we manage with hypoallergenic food

Hello, you are through to Dr Linda, a UK based vet.

What flavour ice cream was it and did it contain e.g. chocolate, raisins, coffee or macadamias?

Has she been ok since?

Customer: replied 17 days ago.
Hi. It was a vanilla McFlurry and had a small amount of smarties in it.She seems reasonably okay, but I worry because she ate sawdust when she was really young and nobody knew for about three days
Expert:  Linda Simmon replied 17 days ago.

Thank you.

Could she have eaten more than 10 smarties?

Customer: replied 17 days ago.
I don’t think so
Expert:  Linda Simmon replied 17 days ago.

Thank you.

The risk to her is relatively low.

Ice cream is high in fat but non toxic. Most dogs would cope fine with the amount she has had. Very sensitive dogs may develop a mild stomach upset e.g. runny stool. Rarely, a dog would develop a more serious condition called pancreatitis.

We should monitor her closely over the next few days for signs such as:

  • Vomiting

  • Diarrhoea

  • Lethargy

  • Reduced appetite

  • Abdominal bloating

Hopefully she remains well.

It would be sensible to feed a bland diet of chicken and rice for the next 24 hours.

I hope this helps!
