Customer Question

My dog ate my hamsters food which contains a small amount of sultanas
JA: I'll do all I can to help. What size is the dog? How much was eaten?
Customer: 23kg, it’s an 850g bag which had a few weeks worth of food taken out and within that I’d probably say 100g are sultanas
JA: When was this? Has the dog thrown up since then?
Customer: No I’ve given her some wet dog food since to see if that helps move anything along it was within the last few hours
JA: And what's the dog's name and age?
Customer: Kelly age 9
JA: Is there anything else the Vet should know?
Customer: She was operated on for GDV last summer

Hello, you are through to Dr Linda, a UK based vet.

I'm sorry to hear Kelly did this.

You are right in saying sultanas are toxic to dogs. They can cause acute kidney failure and even prove fatal.

She has eaten a substantial amount and needs to see a vet IMMEDIATELY.

Signs may not start right away so she may seem ok now but the sooner we bring her to the vet, the better her prognosis.

They will induce vomiting and may also start her on some activated charcoal and an IV drip to minimise absorption.

Fingers crossed with prompt treatment she will do just fine.

Please let me know if this is all ok and if there is anything else,
