Customer Question

My hamster’s fur is falling out
JA: I'll do all I can to help. When did you first notice the hamster was losing fur?
Customer: About 3 weeks ago
JA: Is the hamster's skin bumpy or itchy as well?
Customer: no It’s not, I don’t think he’s been scratching
JA: And what's the hamster's name and age?
Customer: Tiny. He’s almost 2
JA: Is there anything else the Vet should know about Tiny?
Customer: Not really. He’s losing the hair on his face and on his body. I’ve been away for a week and it’s become worse.

Ok

Based on the pictures, I strongly suspect is not good news. Given her age, I think she might have developed some form of hormonal disease (you can see the hyperpigmented areas on the body) and they're often incurable. I can;t exclude parasites either, but I've never seen such a bad hyperkeratosis due to parasites to be honest.

My best recommendation is to try to seek a hands=on examination at your local vet. He/she can do extensive skin tests (skin scrapes, hair plucs, microscopy examination) and start from there. We usually initiate treatment with a product called Xeno (for external parasites) if there's no sign of infection

But having looked at the pictures, I suspect we are dealing mostly with a serious internal medical condition rather than a skin issue. There are some vets (Exotic Specialists) that would be confident in sampling some bloods from Tiny, but your local vet would need to do a proper referral to them

Please let me know if you've got any further questions

Thanks for your help. Tiny is a boy if that makes a difference to the diagnosis?
Expert:  Teodora B replied 14 days ago.

Oh, sorry about that. No, it doesn't unfortunately.
