Customer Question

My rabbit ate chewing gum
JA: I'll do all I can to help. What size is the rabbit? How much of the gum was eaten?
Customer: she’s a small rabbit, a mini lop. She’s 5 months old. It was a chewed up piece of gum out the bin and she ate the whole piece
JA: When was this? Has she thrown up since then?
Customer: she’s not thrown up. It was about 30 minutes ago. She seems fine in herself and has eaten and drank since
JA: And what's the rabbit's name and age?
Customer: willow. She is 5 months
JA: Is there anything else the Vet should know about Willow?

Hi there, this is Dr Linda, a UK based vet.

I'm sorry to hear Willow has done this and understand your concern.

Do you know if it was sugar free gum that contained Xylitol?

Customer: replied 17 days ago.
I’ve just checked and yes it does

Ok, thank you.

I am just typing my reply.

Unfortunately, xylitol is toxic to rabbits.

It can cause life threateningly low blood sugar, which could even prove fatal.

Due to this, it is essential Willow sees a vet immediately, even if she seems well now.

They may check her blood sugar level, as well as putting in an IV catheter so they can introduce fluids and glucose if needed.

This is not something that can wait until morning and the sooner she is seen the better.
