Customer Question

Hi, my cat hasn’t eaten all day and is very lethargic. He has hardly moved all day and when I pick him up to see if he’ll move about he just lies back down straight away
JA: Hi there. A lack of appetite can seem worrying. The Expert will know how to help. Does the cat seem to be in any pain?
Customer: No not any pain he has had a lack of appetite for a couple of weeks and I took him to the vet about this and he picked up a bit but has now gone downhill again
JA: What's the cat's name and age?
Customer: Jasper and he is 11
JA: Is there anything else the Vet should know about Jasper?
Customer: I think that is it

Hi there, this is Dr Linda, a UK based vet.

I'm sorry to hear this and understand your concern for Jasper.

Has he been losing weight?

Are his gums pink and wet?

Any fast breathing or bloating?

Customer: replied 9 days ago.
He has lost weight, yes. His gums do seem pink and wet and he does seem to be breathing faster than normal
Expert:  Linda Simmon replied 9 days ago.

Thank you.

When the vet saw Jasper, did they run any tests such as a blood test or abdominal scan?

Did they mention if his teeth were diseased or if he had inflamed gums?

Customer: replied 9 days ago.
No they haven’t done any tests and they were happy with his teeth
Expert:  Linda Simmon replied 9 days ago.

Thank you, ok.

Has he passed both poo and pee today?

Customer: replied 9 days ago.
He hasn’t since this morning
Expert:  Linda Simmon replied 9 days ago.

He has not passed urine since this morning?

Is he straining to go or spending time in his tray?

Customer: replied 9 days ago.
I’ve just counted his respiratory rate and this is 40
Customer: replied 9 days ago.
He goes outside to the toilet so does not use a litter tray but he has been in the house all day not needing to go
Expert:  Linda Simmon replied 9 days ago.

This is high.

A resting cat should be breathing about 12-20 times a minute.

A high breathing rate can be due to e.g. stress, a fever, a source of pain or heart or lung disease.

The fact he has not passed urine could indicate a urinary issue (such as kidney disease) or dehydration.

Given all you've said and as he is so lethargic, I'd want him checked over tonight if at all possible.

The vet will examine him and may run some tests such as a blood test and imaging so we can get to the bottom of this and start the right treatment plan.

Ok thank you. Do I ring my current vet ?
Expert:  Linda Simmon replied 9 days ago.

Yes.

They may have an emergency service themselves or should be able to let you know where their out of hours provider is based.

Okay thank you for your help
