This answer was rated:

I have a six month old French bulldog that has been sneezing and reverse sneezing all day and now seems to be very snuffly like a heavy cold
JA: I'll do all I can to help. Has the French Bulldog been eating and drinking normally? Have you checked for a fever?
Customer: Yes to eating and drinking.. not sure how to check for a fever
JA: When did this congestion start? Has the French Bulldog been licking or scratching its skin as well?
Customer: she had a kennel cough vaccine on Monday and the sneezing was sporadic from then.. only got constant today.. no itching more than usual
JA: And what's the French Bulldog's name and age?
Customer: Marion. 6 months
JA: Is there anything else the Vet should know about Marion?
Customer: i can’t think of anything else

Hello, this is Dr Linda, a UK based vet.

I'm sorry to hear this and understand your concern for Marion.

Any fast or noisy breathing?

Is she lethargic or off her food?

Customer: replied 13 days ago.
Her breathing is noisy and a little
shallowerer than usual.. she is lethargic but eating normally

Thank you.

Are her gums pink and wet?

Would you be able to count how many times she breathes in one minute?

Customer: replied 13 days ago.
Gyms are pink and wet. Around 20 times I think

Good, that is reassuring.

Any visible discharge from her nose?

Has she had a cough or has she been gagging / dry heaving?

Customer: replied 13 days ago.
Yea .. lots of snot when she sneezes
Customer: replied 13 days ago.
She’s been doing heavy and frequent reverse breathing
Customer: replied 13 days ago.
a few things that sound cough like but not that often

Is the snot clear or does it have a colour?

Is she able to exercise as normal on her walks?

Customer: replied 13 days ago.
The snot is whitish and she has been reluctant to walk although she did play fetch with her stick today

Thank you, ok.

I am just typing my reply now which will take a few minutes.

Marion's signs could have a few causes.

We do know that the Kennel Cough vaccine can cause a mild illness in some dogs in the days after vaccination. However, they should remain relatively well, so there may be more going on here.

As her signs are getting worse and she has a discharge, I'd wonder about a bacterial infection, nasal polyp, allergic rhinitis or foreign body within the nose (such as a grass awn).

Frenchies are more prone to respiratory disease, and less able to cope with it, due to the shape of their face.

She sounds stable for now so we should be okay keeping an eye over night. However, I'd advise a vet visit in the morning.

They will examine her and listen to her heart and lungs, as well as assessing her hydration and temperature.

It may be that she requires some antibiotics and/or anti inflammatories.

At home, ensure she continues to eat and drink and keep the air well ventilated and free of dust, smoke and cooking fumes.

Clean away any discharge with a moist tissue or cotton wool when needed.

Ok. Thank you

Not at all.

This window will remain open and you can check back at any time.

Wishing Marion all the very best.
