Our dog has just come back from a walk in the country side

Customer Question

Our dog has just come back from a walk in the country side and appears to be chocking and panting
JA: I'll do all I can to help. Does this panting happen all the time or only sometimes? Does the dog have a cough as well?
Customer: Yes panting and seems to be trying to unblock her nose. Just taking a drink now
JA: And what's the dog's name and age?
Customer: Snoopy . Just over 3 years
JA: Is there anything else the Vet should know about Snoopy?
Customer: Not sure if in nose or throat

Hello, you are through to Dr Linda, a UK based vet with 10 years of clinical experience.

I'm sorry to hear this and understand your concern for Snoopy.

Is he retching or reverse sneezing?

Can he eat a treat and take a drink?

Customer: replied 21 days ago.
Just taken a drink. I think it would be reverse sneezing and wretching

Would it be possible to send a video?

In between episodes is he completely normal?

Expert:  Linda Simmon replied 21 days ago.

I cannot make calls but we can talk via typing if that is ok.

She seems tired between episodes
Expert:  Linda Simmon replied 21 days ago.

Thank you, understood.

Any nasal discharge or sneezing?

Customer: replied 21 days ago.
No
Expert:  Linda Simmon replied 21 days ago.

How frequent are the episodes happening?

Customer: replied 21 days ago.
Where do I send video to
Expert:  Linda Simmon replied 21 days ago.

You should be able to attach here via the paperclip icon.

You could also upload to a video sharing site like YouTube and post the link here.

I am just downloading these now.

She had been walking through long grass and fields with barley and rape. I wonder had she inhaled seeds
Expert:  Linda Simmon replied 21 days ago.

Bless her, she's lovely.

The videos are very clear.

As these signs have come on abruptly, I would be most suspicious of a foreign body in the nose or throat, such as a grass awn or blade.

Expert:  Linda Simmon replied 21 days ago.

Yes, great minds! I agree this is most likely here.

Other considerations would include a viral infection (that has come on suddenly), allergic rhinitis or a dental issue.

Customer: replied 21 days ago.
What can we do to help her
Expert:  Linda Simmon replied 21 days ago.

If she cannot settle and signs continue, ideally she would see a vet now.

Any foreign body may be able to be removed under light sedation.

Less commonly, we need to perform a scope and retrieve the object that way.

If there is no foreign body, she'll likely benefit from some anti inflammatories and possible some antibiotics.

Can we get these tonight?
Expert:  Linda Simmon replied 21 days ago.

Yes, your vet should offer an out of hours service.

If unsure where this is located, the details should be on your vet's website or answering machine.

I do hope that this has been useful and please let me know if there is anything else.

Take care,

Linda.
