Veterinary questions? Ask a Vet for Answers ASAP
Hello, you are through to Dr Linda, a UK based vet.
I'm sorry to hear this and understand your concern for Kiki.
Did this all start today?
Is she spayed and up to date with her vaccines and wormer?
Thank you for confirming.
And has she been wormed in the last few months too?
Thank you, good.
Are her gums pink and wet?
Any fast breathing or abdominal bloating?
Yes, I am just typing.
Have you recently changed her diet?
Any chance she has eaten something toxic such as a human medicine, plant or raisins or something indigestible such as plastic, wool or string?
I understand, ok.
I am just typing my reply now which will take a few minutes.
Kiki's signs of vomiting and diarrhoea accompanied by a reduced appetite could have several causes including:
As her gums are pink and wet and she has no other signs, it should be ok to monitor from home for now.
Offer water and keep a close eye on her.
In the morning, offer a small portion of chicken and rice to see if she can hold this down.
If she continues to be unwell, a vet visit is best.
They will examine her and may run some tests such as a blood test or abdominal scan if concerned.
Her treatment will depend on what is found and may include e.g. fluids, anti nausea medicine or antibiotics.
Unfortunately when all we know is that Kiki is vomiting and passing diarrhoea, there are a number of things that could be going on.
I have ruled out a range of things by talking with you and asking questions, but we cannot rule out the listed possibilities unless she is checked over and/or some tests are run.
I am happy to tell you she does not need emergency care as she is well hydrated and stable.
I have advised on what we need to do both today and tomorrow.
I am available 24 hours so you can check back in and continue to answer questions over the next few days.
I believe this adds more value than a static web page or Google. If you are not happy with my reply, please let me know how I can be of further help.
Hi there, how is Kiki doing today?
I hope Kiki is now back to normal and please let me know if there is anything else.
Take care,
Linda.
