My 5 month old cat has been lethargic and he was gagging but

Customer Question

My 5 month old cat has been lethargic and he was gagging but not sick. Went to the loo but has been sleeping since. Hasn’t asked for food or anything and barely touched water
JA: I'll do all I can to help. How long has the cat been lethargic? Any changes in his appetite?
Customer: It came on this afternoon, wondering if he’s eaten something dodgy. He hasn’t been hungry this evening
JA: Could he have eaten something unusual?
Customer: He got into a cupboard earlier that has some DIY substances in but doesn’t look like he got into those. I also found a lump of coal on the carpet from the fireplace
JA: And what's the cat's name and age?
Customer: Neville, 5 months
JA: Is there anything else the Vet should know about Neville?
Customer: He was neutered and got a micro chip Thursday last week. But he looks to be healing nicely

Hello there,

Welcome to Just Answer. We are an online advice service. You are through to Dr Coles. I am a UK based vet. I am sorry to hear you are having problems with your cat.

Also, please note that we experts are not employees of Just Answer, but independent here. As such, we are not aware of when you posted your question and I apologize if there has been a delay. I will get back to you as soon as I can, there can be a delay (especially with time difference) however I will respond to you. Can you tell me a little more about what is going on?

Has your cat been on any medication since his neutering? Is he eating normally or refusing food? Did he pass urine and faeces normally?

Customer: replied 17 days ago.
He was given 3 days worth of painkillers which the vet already had given him when he left. He hasn’t come down for food yet and normally would have a few hours ago. My partner says he passed feaces
Customer: replied 17 days ago.
He keeps licking his lips and swallowing so it’s like he needs to be sick
Expert:  RebeccaC921 replied 17 days ago.

OK, does he go outdoors? Could he have gotten injured or in a fight with another cat?

Expert:  RebeccaC921 replied 17 days ago.

it sounds like he feels nauseous.

Expert:  RebeccaC921 replied 17 days ago.

usually lip smacking and swallowing is a sign of nausea.

Customer: replied 17 days ago.
No w arent letting him out until his sibling gets spayed and microchipped. It’s my first pet so just worried but I do think he’s nauseas
Expert:  RebeccaC921 replied 17 days ago.

I understand. If he is nauseous, there are lots of different things that could cause this including gastritis, eating something silly, pancreatitis, reaction to medications etc.

Expert:  RebeccaC921 replied 17 days ago.

You can try to offer him something bland to eat, such as scrambled eggs/chicken/turkey.

Customer: replied 17 days ago.
Could the heat have made him feel poorly too?
Expert:  RebeccaC921 replied 17 days ago.

If he is still feeling sick after that i would recommend having him seen by a vet to ensure there is not something else going on.

Customer: replied 17 days ago.
Ok, thank you
Expert:  RebeccaC921 replied 17 days ago.

Usually cats are good at avoiding the heat and don't tend to get heat stress especially if he hasn't been outside.

Hopefully he feels better soon,

Kind regards,

Dr Coles
