Customer Question

I have a 15 year old Golf with automatic transmission which I have nursed through 160000 miles. Now, however, the transmission does not rise smoothly up through the gears, particularly when going uphill. I have to take my foot off the throttle and press down to the floor to initiate gear change. Is this clutch failure? Is it worth having it repaired or should I just drive it to te end?

this sounds like a lack of internal oil pressure with the gearbox
the 1st thing to do is drain off the old oil and refresh with new
ideally the sump pan needs to also come off and the filter screen in the bottom of the sump needs washing out as they accumulate dirt and carbon build up over time

this often makes a big difference and doesn't cost too much
