I have a 2001 V40 which has done 155,000 without any trouble

I have a 2001 V40 which has done 155,000 without any trouble but now I have this terrible rattle in the dash on the passenger side. It is ok on smooth surface but once it starts it goes on for ages and then as quickly stops. Please help it's driving me mad.
