My car engine keeps cutting out completely when I come to a stop in start stop mode
Expert:  RichardM1126 replied 13 days ago.
Hi my name is Richard

You may be offered a phone call which I don’t think is necessary at the moment,

So when driving normally you come to a stop, the engine cuts out? Then when you put in gear what happens? Does it not start?

Customer: replied 13 days ago.
No
Customer: replied 13 days ago.
U have to turn it on all together
Expert:  RichardM1126 replied 13 days ago.

So it stops as it should by turning engine off. But it won’t restart, has this been since the battery was changed?

Customer: replied 13 days ago.
But wait a while before it can start again
Customer: replied 13 days ago.
Expert:  RichardM1126 replied 13 days ago.

Can I ask did you fit the battery yourself? Was it a AGM battery?

Customer: replied 13 days ago.
Well it only started today but before changing the battery a few weeks ago this has never happened. I have switched off the start/stop mode and it is know longer cutting out
Customer: replied 13 days ago.
I took it to a mechanic
Customer: replied 13 days ago.
I’m not sure what battery it was
Customer: replied 13 days ago.
It was an efb battery
Customer: replied 13 days ago.
Lion EFB battery 096 70AH 650C
Expert:  RichardM1126 replied 13 days ago.

Ok because it must be a AGM battery for a car with the stop start system, not a normal lead acid battery,  as that can cause these issues, efb sounds like the make somewhere on the actual battery it will have the letters AGM standing for Absorbent Glass Matter,

It may be worth getting your mechanic to check the clutch switch is working ok as it’s registered that you have stopped and cut the engine off but not that you want to start off again,

Customer: replied 13 days ago.
it could be battery or clutch
Customer: replied 13 days ago.
It’s an automatic so could it be fuel
Expert:  RichardM1126 replied 13 days ago.

The battery needs to checked make sure it’s the correct type, ok sorry I didn’t realise it was an automatic, it won’t be the fuel, so when you pull up to a standstill the engine cuts out but when you lift off the brake and press the accelerator it doesn’t start?

Customer: replied 13 days ago.
That’s correct the whole car is off
Expert:  RichardM1126 replied 13 days ago.

And when you pull up you don’t take it out off drive you leave the gear selector alone?

As it’s an automatic the brake switch needs to be tested to make sure it’s registering the pedal position

Customer: replied 13 days ago.
the battery I changed was the main car battery not the start/stop battery could it be that start/stop battery needs changing?
Expert:  RichardM1126 replied 13 days ago.
The main car battery controls the stop start system it only has the one that’s why it needs to be the correct type AGM
Customer: replied 13 days ago.
Ok thank you it definitely isn’t an agm battery
Expert:  RichardM1126 replied 13 days ago.
Ok well that definitely needs to be replaced with the correct one as it can cause all sorts of issues, I’m afraid they do tend to be a bit more expensive though
Customer: replied 13 days ago.
Thank you so u think this is why
Expert:  RichardM1126 replied 13 days ago.
it would explain the fault you had, once changed the system will work correctly
Customer: replied 13 days ago.
It says that When replacing the starter battery in cars with the Start/Stop function, a battery of EFB type or stronger must be installed.
When replacing the support battery, a battery of AGM type must be fitted.
Customer: replied 13 days ago.
What batter do I need to change then
Customer: replied 13 days ago.
The support batter I have never changed yet
Customer: replied 13 days ago.
Could it be that the support batter needs changing ?
Expert:  RichardM1126 replied 13 days ago.
The efb is for smaller cars and AGM is for normal size cars did the battery you took off have EFB or AGM on it?
Customer: replied 13 days ago.
I don’t know
Expert:  RichardM1126 replied 13 days ago.
That needs to be checked if it was a AGM but a EFB has been fitted instead that will cause the problems
Customer: replied 13 days ago.
Ok thank you I will go back
